Before even listening to the album, I can’t help but notice the awful, 2007-esque album cover featuring all seven of the Maroon 5 members with snapchat filters on. It screams, “Look! We aren’t old yet!” Their music, for the most part, also reflects wanting to stay young, cool and relevant, but for me it was a huge miss.

After listening to the first part of the first song, “Best 4 U,” I admit I groaned because it started off like every other basic song on the radio with little effort and perfect sell-out possibilities. Their songs seem to stay at the same pitch and all sound vaguely the same, with little melody supported by heavy techno beats.

Then I heard the beginning of “Wait.” It started off with low rich tones, and it caught me off guard. Later it got back into their normal pop flow, but it was still beautiful, I felt it was something that I would fine on a chill vibes playlist. It seemed like an alternative pop song, which was refreshing.

Another song that pleasantly surprised me was “Lips on You.” Although, it’s still very poppy — it was cool, I liked it. It was appealing and captured my attention.

The next songs on their album were a blur because they all sound the same to me. I actually thought I was listening to the same song on repeat for while. They all fall onto techno drum loops and some other effect noises.

The first song I felt had any real emotion was “Whiskey,” which features A$AP Rocky was almost moving. I also appreciated that it didn’t have any heavy beats or too much background — just some piano and background vocals. It was pretty.

Overall, my opinion of them hasn’t changed. I still think they are a sellout band who sold their souls to Satan for popularity and make mediocre songs. Perfect for family radio, not great for my angsty teen ears.
