Sullivan’s Island hosted their yearly Christmas tree lighting on Dec. 1. People from all over the Mount Pleasant area come to this uplifting event, preparing them for the most wonderful time of the year- Christmas.

Senior, Anna Caroline Higgins, has been singing within chorus all of her high school career, and took part in this Christmas event. “All the songs are classics that we do every year, but we did have a few lunch rehearsals in order to get the full sound of the songs with all of the classes,” said Higgins.

At this event, there are pizzas, cookies, and drinks for all of those who attend. The night starts when the streets begin to fill with cars. There are signs everywhere to direct the traffic in the correct direction. While the people flood in, the streets begin to light up. One by one, until, every corner is shining with Christmas joy.

The event started with an introduction to the Wando chorus. The people gathered around as the students fill the stands.

“It’s always fun to perform in front of a large crowd, but the Sullivan’s Island Tree Lighting is nice because the audience knows a majority of the songs and so we are always met with excited faces.

Each student was dressed in Christmas attire: presents, trees, and even the traditional holiday characters. The chorus began with songs that most people grow up listening to, until they surprised the audience with some marvelous mashups of Christmas favorites and traditional classics.

“My favorite song was Betelehemu because the movements we do along with the song are always fun, and the solos and percussion in the song were amazing.” said Higgins.

The students could not have done it without their fantastic teachers.

“Mr. Wilkinson has the most influence on me within chorus, his musical knowledge makes every song we do dynamic and powerful. His emphasis to get to know his students resonates with a lot of people.” said Higgins.

All together, the night was a huge success. Everyone who attended was smiling and expressing their Christmas spirit.
