Capturing a Glimpse: Brotherly competition

David and Paul Kowalchick train together, practice together, and compete together. The photos that follow illustrate the dedication that they have to their craft and to each other.

“I remember the first day my mom said we were going to track... and I was like ‘No’” David says. Kelly Kowalchik has been a key figure in her sons’ throwing career since the very beginning and has not let up yet. In college, she was accepted to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a full scholarship for throwing. It is this experience in the sport that helps Mrs. Kowalchik in training...

While in school, Mr. Paul Kowalchik played football. His love of athletics inspired him to become a coach after retirement, something which he has been doing for over two decades. Currently, he is assisting Wando’s throwing team and his two sons as they head to the Naval Academy.

Paul watches David as he sets up his next shot. “I’ll throw one shot and Paul follows up with a better one” David says. The two feed off each other for motivation in their sport, and now plan on doing so in the Navy. “We both wanted to serve the country, get a good education, and compete at a high athletic level” David said.

After the Naval Academy, David Kowalchik wants to join the Marine Corps for “the culture and warrior ethos they embody.” He plans on becoming an Infantry Officer and working ground or other combat positions.
