“Don’t Look Up” is surprisingly outstanding

January 25, 2022

Don’t Look Up was released December 5th, 2021.The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett, Ariana Grande, Timothee Chalamet, and Meryl Streep. This film was directed by Adam Mckay, aka the guy who directed almost every Will Ferrell movie ever. I’m happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised by Don’t Look Up. It was witty, unique, entertaining, and it made me so paranoid to the point where I went on an internet deep dive trying to find out how to survive an extinction level event. But I mean if a movie doesn’t make you fear for your life, then is it really that good?

I wasn’t expecting to like this movie as much as I did. I actually didn’t expect to like it at all. I figured it was some huge mess of a movie that used some famous celebrities as movie clickbait to trick people into thinking it was good. However, I loved the sense of humor and unique directing style of this film. It also had a lot of real-world symbolism and was pretty obviously made to yell at society for being stupid. What it was being stupid about, is up to interpretation. Although, a lot of people believe this film was made as a satire mocking President Trump’s reaction when the pandemic first broke out, hence the simple brushing-off-the-shoulders act that Meryl Streep’s character performed.

Overall, I liked Jennifer Lawrence’s “Kate”. Although I can’t be sure how I would act if the world was going to end and no one cared, I thought she was a pretty realistic portrayal of someone living in a world that she feels has gone crazy; she was funny, enraged, and a little all over the place.

I thought Leonardo DiCaprio’s character “Randall” was a nice guy at first, but he started to really get on my nerves throughout the course of the film. He put on this whole innocent shy guy act, but he cheated on his wife and neglected his family, which basically made me lose all respect for him. However, I thought Timothee Chalamet’s “Yule” was so funny. While sometimes I think he’s overrated and used too often, his character was definitely my favorite. From his bad hair extensions to his stereotypical dumb teenager attitude, he was by far the most entertaining character.

Meryl Streep’s “President Orlean” and Jonah Hill’s “Jason”, especially Jonah’s character in my opinion, were also pretty funny. I thought the fact that they were mother and son was so funny, as well as the fact that Meryl’s character accidentally left her son on a dying planet.

All in all, I’d recommend Don’t Look Up to someone who just wants something fun and chaotic in a good way to watch. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it made me go down an internet rabbit hole in the middle of the night. And honestly, I don’t know whether I cried more over the ending, or the fact that Matthew Perry’s cameo was cut out. Probably the second one. Maybe next time, Matthew.
