The sun’s golden morning rays glisten while they sneak between the trees, the lingering smell of sawdust and a natural wooden aroma strike the noses of AP Human Geography teacher Dr. Jason Brisini and the students joining his AP Academy carpenting lesson.
On the morning of Sunday, December 15, Brisini and his AP Academy lecturees worked for two hours to create a self-made piece they could take home, learning some of the ins and outs of carpenting along the way.
“[We built] a wooden tray, which is cool because it’s something we can finish [in] about two hours… it’s nothing… abnormally large,” Brisini said.
Brisini chose to pursue carpenting after dabbling in the hobby for a few years. He would create his own business, partially motivated by some personal factors.
“I opened my business in late 2019 and after realizing it would probably make a couple extra bucks for our wedding,” Brisini said. “When we moved into our current house in 2019… [that was] the first time I had an actual garage… then I could get multiple tools, et cetera, et cetera.”
Brisini has not let the convenience of having such a flexible and utilitarian skill go unnoticed.
“I’ve always found it kind of cool… if I need a new bench or table… I can do it, that way I don’t have to wait on somebody, you know, I could do that on my own time,” Brisini said. “I’ve always kind of liked being able to do things I can sell instead of hiring people to do ‘X, Y, or Z’”.
