“A girl a bottle a boat” Fails to Take You Down Memory Lane

There’s nothing like kicking back, putting in your earbuds and jamming out to your favorite artists from the late 2000’s.

For me, that was Train.

“Drops Of Jupiter,” “Hey Soul Sister,” and “50 Ways to Say Goodbye” were my go to songs when I want to take a trip down memory lane. But considering Train’s new album,“A girl a bottle a boat” when I listen to them, my trip down memory lane ends with the three songs mentioned above. The new album consisted of 10 songs ranging from jazzy tunes to songs that remind me of nursery rhymes and kiddish piano riffs. Songs like “Drink Up” and “You Better Believe” put me in a good mood and gave off a relaxed, feel good song. Other songs like “Lottery” and “Loverman” were completely different in the sound and style that comes to mind when I hear the name Train. “Play That Song” was released as a single before the album came out and to be honest got to be really repetitive as it went on. But it was songs like “Valentine” and “Working Girl” that brought me back to my 10 and 11 year old days jamming out to my favorite Train tunes.

The mellow mood but also the excited feeling. There were some others that were…more or less, forgettable. They were okay, but not something to go crazy about and listen to over and over again. Given the entirety of the album, I would say that this is definitely something different from what I’ve heard from Train in the previous years, and change is sometimes good, but not all the time. Maybe a totally new direction will take him somewhere, but all in all if I had an option to buy an album, I would stick to “California 37” and “Save Me, San Francisco.”
