Two new local businesses, Crafthouse North, serving sushi and classic bar food, and Cremino Gelato and Caffe, in Carolina Park have become popular places for teens to eat and work.
At Crafthouse North, junior Kennedy Lagestee’s job involves running food, cleaning tables and checking in with customers.
“I love my [the owners, Todd and Tessa Miller],” Lagestee said. “And when I am there they kinda make me feel like I am at a second home.”
Crafthouse North is also a very welcoming environment for Lagestee, she said.
Sophomore Wade McMillen also works at Crafthouse North and helps wash glasses, bus tables and run food out to customers. McMillen has had a similar work experience as Lagestee at Crafthouse North.
McMillen has also met co-workers who he hangs out with after work.
“I really like my co-workers, but also I’ve met a lot of new people that are really cool,” McMillen said.
Crafthouse North is mainly known for their sushi, but they have a variety of menu items. Lagestee loves the sushi rolls, while McMillen’s favorite menu item is the pretzel. Together, their different favorites show the wide range of dishes that can be ordered at Crafthouse North.
Both Lagestee and McMillen appreciate similar aspects of their jobs.
“Our trivia and bingo nights are busy,” McMillen said. “But I get to meet a lot of people who I wouldn’t have normally met.”

Just a few stores down, another new business that employs students is Cremino Gelato and Caffe. Junior Elizabeth Harding has been working there since it opened right after Memorial Day.

Cremino is a family-owned business run by Isabela and Lawrence Ramos. Harding is involved in chorus and theatre, so she has a very busy schedule, and they are very understanding of that.
“We’ve been getting a lot of customers because it is right by the school, ” Harding said. “And lots of families come, which is nice to see.”
Harding’s responsibilities include working the cash register, scooping gelato and making coffee. Similar to Crafthouse North, Cremino is not only known for what they sell, but for how they bring the community together through the positive atmosphere.
“We have a lot of fun working with other people because they are all my age and the owners are super sweet,” Harding said. “And it’s fun getting gelato.”
It’s not just Harding who feels this way. McMillen also notices the positive environment while working at Crafthouse North.
“I like working because I like working with people from the community,” McMillen said. ”And I like seeing people from Wando who I may not have seen in a while.”
