Snubbed. That is the only word to describe the monstrosity that was the 2025 Grammys.
When Kanye West and his wife, Bianca Censori, showed up unannounced and Censori was wearing a sheer dress where you could see everything, I knew I was in for a wild ride.
Less than ten awards were presented in the three-and-a-half hours that the Grammys took place. However, the ones that were, were given to pretty much the same two people: Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar.
Beyonce has never won the most coveted award before: Album of the Year, and she won it this year. Why? I have no idea. Who even listened to “Cowboy Carter” besides when “Texas Hold ‘Em” came out? I would have been happy with anyone else winning the award except for her. It should have gone to Billie Eilish for “Hit Me Hard and Soft” or to Chappell Roan for “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.” Anyone but Beyonce. Billie’s song “Birds of a Feather” has over 300 million streams, and that is more than Beyonce’s entire album. I think that fact speaks for itself. Billie was literally crying because she was so robbed.
“Not Like Us” is the first diss track to ever win a Grammy, which I’ll give to Kendrick Lamar, but there was no reason for the same song to win four awards, including Record and Song of the Year. Song of the Year should have gone to Sabrina Carpenter for “Espresso” but instead, she submitted “Please Please Please,” which was definitely an error on her part.
However, Carpenter did win the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album, and I don’t mean to be a hater, but that should have gone to Ariana Grande’s album, “Eternal Sunshine.” I mean, the vocals on those songs were unlike anything I’ve ever heard.
“Die With a Smile” won Pop Duo/Group Performance of the Year, which is very understandable as it has the record for being the fastest song to reach a billion streams on Spotify. Chappell Roan won Best New Artist, which is the only award that I am happy with. She deserves it above anyone else. Her speech itself was one of the highlights of the night. The way she casually said, “Labels, we got you, but do you got us?” lives in my mind rent-free.
I feel bad for Benson Boone, though. Every time he has been nominated for Best New Artist, he is always up against Roan and Gracie Abrams, who I was surprised was not nominated for that category this year. He also caused a large stir on social media because of the way he readjusted his jumpsuit at the end of his performance, which I’ll admit, he could have turned around for, but hey, he just performed at the Grammys and did a sick backflip, so I’ll let it slide.
One of my favorite celebrity couples was there: Olivia Rodrigo and Louis Partridge, and Rodrigo’s outfit was everything. It was one of my favorites of the night. I was also very upset that she did not win Best Song Written for Visual Media for her song “Can’t Catch Me Now” from “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” Instead, it went to Jon Batiste for his song from “American Symphony.” I had never heard of that movie, so I was like “Huh? What is that?”
The Grammys started off the award season this year terribly, so hopefully, the Oscars, which come next, help out the Grammys and redeem this heinousness.
