Ah, yes, Chappell Roan. She is the newest and hottest sensation in the industry of pop music, painting herself as a “gay icon.”
Roan rose to popularity after her big hit, “Hot To Go” on her 2023 debut album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.” Fans instantly fell in love with Roan. However, she is not new to the music industry at all. She spent almost ten years promoting her music and released her first Extended Play (EP) in 2017.
Recently, she has been under some controversy. Her quick rise to fame seems to have overwhelmed the young celebrity.
On August 23rd, Roan made a statement through her Instagram calling out unruly fans. Stating that “I’ve been in too many non-consensual physical and social interactions and I just need to lay it out and remind you, women don’t owe you s-–.” she follows this up with, “Please stop touching me. Please stop being weird to my family and my friends.”
Her goal is to be able to have a balance between her life and her work. This struck the internet like wildfire, especially after the musician posted a very blunt video to TikTok earlier in the week.
“I don’t care that this crazy type of behavior comes along with the job,” said Roan.
Hundreds of thousands of fans and other female celebrities are coming forward to speak on the issue at hand. Paramore’s lead singer, Hayley Williams, reposted Roan’s statement and said,
“Read the whole thing and the caption too. This happens to every woman I know from this business, myself included. Social media has made this worse. I’m really thankful Chappell is willing to address it in a real way, in real-time. It’s brave and unfortunately necessary.”
Fans posted their concerns for Roan through all forms of social media. Some fans are worried that making statements about pervy or gross behavior from other fans will just make Roan more of a target for those ‘superfans’ to come for her, but others are empowered by the celebrity’s statements.
Then the VMA’s happened. Roan walked the carpet and the media proceeded to take her pictures. During the shoot, a photographer yelled at Roan telling her to “shut the f— up.” She struck back, “Don’t. You shut the f— up.” then pointed at the unidentified photographer, “No. Not me b—”
Because of Roan’s behavior at the VMAs, fans were left with very mixed feelings. Some fans have felt like the singer was just out of line and acting unprofessionally while she was at the widely viewed media event, whereas others feel that Roan is just not media-trained enough like older celebrities such as Taylor Swift or Selena Gomez. Either way, most are in favor of the behavior since she stood up for herself, which typically female celebrities do not do.
Going back to July of this year, Roan was featured on a talk show podcast The Comment Section, hosted by Drew Afualo, a TikTok influencer. On the podcast, Roan stated that she wanted to “pump the brakes” on her skyrocketing career.
“I’m just kind of in this battle … I’ve pumped the brakes on, honestly, anything to make me more known. It’s kind of a forest fire right now. I’m not trying to go do a bunch of ….,” said Roan.
This is all after the Midwest princess had promised herself that she would quit music if her fans and or followers started the stalkerish behavior.
Will Roan quit? Are fans of the pop star hoping that the stalker-like behavior will eventually fade?
