The MTV Music Awards (VMAs) is one of the renowned award shows in the music industry, so there is always a lot of hype around it. This year, however, they really missed the boat.
The outfits. What were those? The red carpet starts off the night, so if the outfits do not look good, it will set the wrong tone for the entire show.
One of the first people who arrived on the carpet was TikTok star and singer Addison Rae, who showed up looking like the duster from Beauty and the Beast. Then singers Camila Cabello and Tate McCrae came in, and they looked like identical twins going to a goth funeral.
GloRilla’s outfit reflected her name; you could see her from space. Karol G looked like she got her outfit from the discount section at Goodwill. Safe to say, people left their looks at home.
To start the show, rapper Flavor Flav and Olympian Jordan Chiles presented the award for Best Collaboration, and let me say, that was the most awkward interaction I have ever seen. Flav mentioned the dramatic medal debacle at the Paris Olympics where Chiles and Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu battled for the bronze medal in the floor routine. It ended up going to Barbosu, and Chiles got her medal revoked. Flav felt bad, so he gave her a bronze version of his iconic clock necklace. She was being so weird about it and not even thanking him, and that made me mad because he went out of his way to make that for her, and she did not even show appreciation for it.
They gave Katy Perry the Video Vanguard award this year, and I have to say, I disagree with their choice. Considering the flop that was “Woman’s World,” I was surprised to see that she was chosen. She sang a mashup of some of her greatest hits like “Teenage Dream,” “Dark Horse,” and “Last Friday Night,” during the show and I was mildly disappointed. I was expecting her to sing “Roar,” but instead of doing that, she made out with Orlando Bloom on stage. No one wants to see that. Take it home, please.
Sabrina Carpenter had some PDA of her own going on. During her performance of “Please Please Please,” “Taste,” and “Espresso,” she started to kiss an alien, which made me kind of uncomfortable.
There were way too many performances and no awards. In the span of the first two hours, they gave out two awards. Two! The rest were given offscreen, but I would have loved to see them.
The awards were accurately given, though. Taylor Swift won seven of the 12 awards she was nominated for, which I think we all saw coming. Chappell Roan won Best New Artist over Gracie Abrams and Tyla, which was an incredibly close competition, after she was seen on video cursing out a photographer on the red carpet.
Two of the biggest artists in music were notably missing: Olivia Rodrigo and Ariana Grande. Grande won a few awards for her song “we can’t be friends (wait for your love),” so it was a shock to some people that she was not there.
If I am being honest, the VMAs flopped; they were boring and somewhat anticlimactic. I am looking forward to them hopefully redeeming themselves next year.
