Seniors get a chance to lean into their childhood one more time before they officially enter adulthood in a tradition where they wear nostalgic backpacks for their last year at high school. The tradition is more than just comedic irony; it is symbolic. Senior backpacks give graduating students a way to carry a piece of their childhood with them everywhere they go, until they no longer need it anymore.
Even though it has become a recognizable part of the school’s culture, the tradition of senior backpacks did not start at Wando. It is believed to have spread through social media, where students across the country began posting photos of themselves carrying childhood backpacks as a lighthearted way to mark their final year. What may have started as a small joke or a senior prank slowly turned into something more intentional, and now takes place in our very own hallways.
In a sea of black Jansport backpacks, there will always be at least one senior wearing a sequin unicorn bag. Senior backpacks are a statement of originality and boldness. It is not mandatory to wear one, and many do not, but they can easily become a vessel of self expression for those who choose to let them. They stand out against all the other grade levels, further pushing the Disney show stereotype that seniors rule the hallways.

Putting on one of these bags is a full circle moment. The stresses of high school, especially by the fourth year, point students to look forward to where they are walking to, but these artifacts of nostalgia on their backs are their reminder of what they are walking away from.
Story circles, nap time and crust-removed sandwiches may have been replaced by Socratic seminars study time and energy drinks, but soon, bedrooms will be replaced with dorm rooms, homecooked meals will be replaced by self-serve food hall trays and old friends will be replaced with new friends. Senior backpacks are a last chance to be a kid.
At Wando, certain senior backpack trends always rise to the surface, from superheroes to memes to tiny plush backpacks that barely zip. But it is not just how they look, but what they carry. These bags, clearly too small for the weight of senior year, are really stuffed with the pressure of college applications, jobs and decisions that feel anything but childish. The contrast is hard to ignore. The outside reflects where the seniors have been,

while the inside carries everything they are about to face.
Senior backpacks also give students a way to show a bit of their personality. The choices are usually not random. Some go with characters they liked as kids, others pick something ironic or just funny and some match their backpacks to their interests or friend groups. They can also end up starting conversations, especially when someone recognizes a character or design that is more niche. It gives people an easy way to connect over shared interests, even if they have never talked before.
Cartoon characters, lunchbox style bags and worn-out kindergarten backpacks fill the halls in a way that feels both out of place and completely fitting at the same time. Senior backpacks are a tradition Wando will hopefully participate in for years to come.
