Senior Sunset will be held by the Student Council on May 28 to commemorate the experiences all the seniors have shared for the past four years, and to celebrate being together one last time.
Seniors Adele Harris and Cara Olmo both plan on attending Senior Sunset.
“It is kind of exciting, but also sad because it is probably the last time seeing some of these people all in one place,” Olmo said. “It is like I have been waiting for this moment for so long, but now that it is here, I kinda’ want it to go away a little bit.”
With graduation nearing, many seniors are uncertain about their feelings about graduating.
“I would definitely say that as the last few days of high school are coming up … it is definitely a bittersweet feeling,” Harris said. “We have been in this place for four years and made so many memories here and built so many friendships that will be hard to leave, but it is also exciting because everyone is getting their college decisions and figuring out what their next step in life is going to be, and so we get to cheer them on.”
At the beginning of freshman year, the student council organizes an event called freshman sunrise. This event symbolizes the sun rising on their high school career. When seniors attend senior sunset is a big full circle moment when they realize how far they have come since freshman year.
“It definitely does make graduating feel more real,” Olmo said. “I mean, bringing us all together to give us a chance to talk and stuff, it is like our last big hangout.”
Student Council Advisor Jessie Bunting has helped put on the event for years prior and plans on helping organize it again this year.
“It is the night before graduation and it’s on the football field and it’s like a send-off to … [college],” Bunting said. “We do superlatives, we have some fun things going on like treats … last year it was so fun and it was just a sweet time getting to celebrate the seniors and everyone had so much fun”
Every year, there are events and games at senior sunset.
“I think it is going to be really fun to be together one last time and before everyone graduates and goes their separate ways and to do the little outdoor games and being together and having fun for your last night in high school,” Harris said.
Senior Sunset has a double meaning, as the sun setting represents the end of their high school career, but the start of a new chapter in their lives.
”It is very wholesome because it is like the sun is setting on your high school career which is a really sweet thought,” Harris said. “I think it’s gonna’ be really cute to be together one last time before graduation and before everyone goes off on their own separate ways.”
