Movie industry needs equal pay

Millions, sometimes even billions, of dollars spent on the production for just a few hours of entertainment.

Sometimes, it isn’t even worth it, hundreds of millions down the drain.

The United States’ movie industry is worth almost one hundred billion dollars, that’s almost as much as the entirety of the United States’ automotive industry.

The fact that a purely entertainment based industry is almost worth as much as something vitally important to the livelihoods of Americans is frankly dumbfounding.

That being said, if the industry needs to be worth that much, so be it.

In return however, the industry needs to become more balanced.

Movies that cost millions are often only worth so much because of the big names attached, when in reality, the movies are only made so well and so quickly because of the hundreds of undercredited staff members who do make up, build sets, work with visual effects, or specialize in CGI.

Those are the people who deserve most of the money.

Actors are paid too much. They show up, shoot for a few hours, sometimes even phoning in their lines, and walk away with enough money to buy a private island. This is directly contrasted with your behind the scenes worker who will stay up countless nights to ensure the quality of the product just to be paid pennies on the dollar.

Yes, the actors may be the stars of the show, but no one would ever watch a Marvel movie that didn’t have amazing CGI and beautiful effects.

If the movie industry wishes to continue at the scale it does, it needs to become fair.

A movie set is like a puzzle, full of moving pieces, and if one piece is gone, the puzzle isn’t complete, the work of art isn’t appreciated as much.

Those pieces are all equal, and though one piece may shine brighter on the screen, that piece is only highlighted because of its surrounding elements.

A multimillion dollar film should mean hundreds of people walking away from the project able to fully support themselves.

Even the smallest job on set should warrant a fair cut from the film.

Staff members on movie sets deserve the credit and monetary gain on a similar level as the big league actors and actresses.

They are just as integral, and without them, the million dollar dream films would become low quality messes.

The movie industry, like any other, should be held to a higher standard that is fair to all who work within it.
