After repeatedly supporting and aiding in the student media programs at Wando, Chas Coker has been recognized by the Southern Interscholastic Press Association (SIPA) and has been chosen for the Dr. Kay Phillips Administrator of the Year award this year. The award intends to congratulate such people for their hard work and support of student publications.
Coker’s efforts to maintain a well-run student media was originally noticed by Phillip Caston, the advisor of the Tribal Tribune newsmagazine and Legend yearbook programs, who ended up nominating the principal for this honor.
“Ever since he’s been a principal here, Coker has been extremely supportive of the Wando student media, and our endeavors,” Caston said. “Not to mention the cultivation of the students. And he celebrates our successes, as well.”
Phillips herself, who bears the name of the award, was a large advocate for administrators who recognized the value and importance of student journalism, and spent time building such projects. Her award celebrates the determination of those out there who intend to maintain a great student media program.
“I felt that Coker fit all of the criteria and the vision that Kay Phillips had,” Caston said. “He’s provided such strong administrative support.”
With celebrating wins, hanging trophies and securing better equipment for the students, Coker has demonstrated his respect for Wando student media, and his excitement for the future of the program. Having SIPA’s official recognition, student media will hopefully go on to further their successes in future competitions and events, and build an even stronger relationship with Coker.
“He’s open, and easy to approach and work with the students,” Caston said. “He’s continuing Wando and Charleston County’s commitment to great student journalism.”

Screaming, crying, this was the most beautiful story I have ever grazed my eyes upon. At the very first moment my cornea focused on this page tears filled my eyes. Upon reading the first sentence I wept with such joy that a rainbow immediately filled the sky. After the first paragraph I was on the floor enthralled by how captivating each sentence was. Hanging on every word I felt just as I did as a child, with such wonder in my heart, my life flashed before my eyes, every second I knew more and more… I have to comment. So to the writer, this is a work of art so beautiful, perhaps to be treasured among Shakespeare’s works in a museum. Now I even keep a printed copy of this story suspended on my ceiling so that every night I may get the honor to rest my eyes upon this treasure, as it now consumes my every dream. 5 stars! Great story! 🙂
