As I spun the focus ring of my camera, granules of sand crunched within. The wind howled in my ears. And, of course, there were people using flashlights at the bottom of the boardwalk. The circumstances could not be any worse. I had given up. I figured there was no way I would be able to take any photos in the condition the beach was in. As we crossed the boardwalk back to where my car was parked, my friend sat on a bench to adjust their shoes. I put my camera on the ground. The clouds opened, revealing the glowing core of the Milky Way behind them. I flipped my camera on. The settings were already in place, I just had to press the shutter. I screamed when I saw the result.

The lights of the Wando sports fields were turned on at 8 p.m. and names were read at 8:20 p.m. on April 24. "I am super sad the season ended because the group of girls this year just had a really strong connection," said senior varsity lacrosse player Anna Turner. Maretta and Ed McKenna set up candlelight luminaries on April 1. Maretta took inspiration from annual luminary events in Hamlin Plantation, especially those around the winter holidays. "To me it’s just to curse the darkness and get rid of the darkness, and show that there’s light and there’s hope," she said.

Fitness chalk challenges appeared over Hamlin from the beginning of school closings. The one on Shell Fish Court was sparked by Maretta McKenna’s container of chalk left out for passerbys to use. “I’ve got this chalk sitting in my garage, so if the kids can use it I’m happy,” McKenna said. “You know, it gives me a sense of hope and belonging to the community and I think that’s important.”

A vase of flowers with a note reading “Please take a flower and stay well and hopeful” sits on a cooler outside Maretta and Ed McKenna’s house. Maretta has set up interactives on her driveway since March 30, including chalk passerbys could draw with. "Whatever I can do to put a smile on somebody’s face, even if I don’t know I did it, is good," she said.

Intramed Plus nurse Brian Daigle loads donated snacks into his car to bring to MUSC Main Campus.

A plastic bin holding snacks sits on the porch of Sandra Klein’s house with a sign reading, “MUSC, Roper & Trident Snack Bin Drop Off.” Klein began collecting healthy snacks after finding inspiration through Facebook. The reach of Klein’s snack campaign had expanded to East Cooper Medical Center in Mount Pleasant by March 28. “I’m planning to just continue doing this now for a while and just kind of gauging where we are next week versus the next week,” Klein said.

It was a warm, still night when I arrived at the top of the parking garage. A storm flashed lightning over the ocean behind me, and the sun glowed orange behind the Ravenel Bridge in front of me. A plane passed over my head and into the silent storm. I stood at the rail, feeling the hot breeze from the street below flip up my hair. A church became enshrouded in its nighttime light, and no cars were passing below me -- the stoplight was red. But the stoplight within me turned green, and I knew the calm before the storm would be frozen still by my camera.
